The Suitcase Series for Clicker 5 is a collection of nearly two hundred finished activities or gridsets developed by Learning Magic, Inc. in technical collaboration with Fio Quinn who was also the primary author of our The Suitcase Series for IntelliTools Classroom Suite which we released last year.

As you will see in the screenshot below the CD’s activities or “gridsets” are organized into a number of different academic areas.

The outer or external folders are populated with a number of subfolders which in turn contain a wide variety of activities or gridsets (i.e. the Math folder’s contents are shown below).

And then each subfolder contains a wide variety of activities or gridsets in a variety of engaging formats. The Numbers folder’s contents are shown in the screenshot below.

In a few cases the external folder contains a variety of subfolders which contain a number of related activities or gridsets tied to a specific curriculum subject.

As an example, the Social Studies external folder shown below contains eight different subfolders. Each subfolder contains a number of activities related to that subject.

In Learning About Ancient Egypt, students not only read about life in Ancient Egypt in a variety of different areas, (i.e. fashion, food, citizens and slaves, homes, religion) but they also have the opportunity to write in hieroglyphics, complete different exercises or puzzles as well as write about their new found knowledge using Clicker Writer.

When a student clicks on the Social Studies folder and then on the “Learning about Ancient Egypt” subfolder, the student will receive this home grid for Ancient Egypt related activities/gridsets.

When the student clicks on the read the book, they are presented with two levels to choose from. Level 1 is more concise and easier to read. Level 2 is more complex and has more complicated vocabulary.

In both levels students are presented with ten curriculum areas to read about. When the “read the book” cell or button is clicked on and level 1 or 2 is chosen, students then are presented with the following screen.

The student now has the opportunity read or listen to information about each of the areas (i.e. fashion, pyramids, farming, the Nile river, the after life, children, food, writing, kings and gods and finally houses). The subject matter is supported by key vocabulary words being highlighted along with pop-up vocabulary definition support that is built in. Graphics and other support options are also built in to provide multi-modalities for learning (i.e. visual, auditory and participative).

After reading about each area, the student can choose to do a number of exercises or puzzles. They can also learn to write like an Egyptian using hieroglyphics.

This screenshot shows the hieroglyphic keyboard which students can use to write their names or other words/sentences of their choosing.

An additional example of a varying format for student learning can be found in the Learning About Ancient Greece. After reading about Grecian fashion, one of the activities within this study unit asks children to first dress a Grecian Soldier by selecting different items from a pop-up menu. In the screenshot below the student has already put a tunic and leather sandals on the soldier. They are now asked to add a breastplate to their soldier.

In a secondary follow-on activity students are then asked to label different clothing items as a part of the Grecian study unit.

These are just a few examples of how the activities/gridsets in the Social Studies area are organized and how the content may be presented.

Similarly when the Science external folder is chosen, students will be presented with fifteen different study units or gridsets.

If the student then clicks on the “Life Cycles” cell or button they will be presented with the following screen which gives them six animal or plant life cycles to read and write about.

If the student chooses to learn about the frog, they will first read about the different stages of a frog’s life cycle and learn that a frog is an amphibian. Once they have completed the reading assignment, they then have the opportunity to write about what they have learned.

This screenshot is an example of one of the supported writing grids that are built into the Suitcase Series for Clicker 5. By clicking on the sentence starter on the left and a sentence finishing part on the right, students can write about their knowledge of the frog and its life cycle.

Please note: A number of the school districts who have Clicker 5 installed have set up individual folders for students so that all of their work can be saved into them, for later review and assessment.

Switching now to the Early Learning folder when a student clicks on one of the Early Learning cell or folder they are presented with eight different topical areas as seen in the screenshot below.

If a student is working on spatial concepts and clicks on that cell they are then presented with a number of different activities that are available for them to use and study. The screenshot below shows the activities or gridsets within the spatial concepts folder.

As a final example of the contents of “The Suitcase Series for Clicker 5” CD, in the Language Arts folder you will see that that there are thirty seven different activities that have been developed to assist students in the areas of Alphabet/letter recognition, spelling, writing (i.e. standard and postcards of different complexities) as well as working on indefinite articles and diphthongs.

Beyond these academic areas that we have touched on in this brief overview there are a wide variety of activities and formats for children to use in their learning endeavors. Please note that the Suitcase Series for Clicker 5 is also inclusive of folders that include instructional Games, Sounds and Music activities and a folder with three Communication Boards of different complexities.
